Social Issue and Social Teaching

The social issue that my project focuses on is poverty, more sepcifically, how poverty affects education. One article that I looked at during my Junior research last year is "Immediate Effects of a Program to Promote School Readiness in Low - Income Children: results of a pilot study." This article reflects the issues of child preparedness for school, and that is the issue that my project deals with, however it isn't specifically about how having the supplies they need will help them be prepares. This article does show how low-income children's education is affected by their economic situation, and that ties into the social issue of poverty. My service work helps address the needs of this social issue through providing school supplies and backpacks to low-income children. In doing this I hope to give the parents of these kids one less thing to worry about paying for. These parents work hard to provide for their families, but thier focus isn't on school, it's on feeding and clothing their kids.
The Catholic Social Teaching Theme that my project connects with the article I chose and my project, is Option for the Poor and Vulnerable. This is one of my themes that I listed last year for my project, the other was Call to Family, Community and Participation. My understanding of these Catholic Social Teachings have grown since I began my project work. The themes now seem to connect more to real life instead of just being something taught in a Religion class. My opinion of these themes has changed, I now believe that these themes are important in our life, and we should really take them to heart as a guide in the way we live our lives.
